$7.25/Hour Minimum Wage Increase is a Step in the Right Direction

Jul 24, 2009 - Although the federal minimum wage increase from $6.55 to $7.25 an hour reflects a growing understanding that workers face enormous financial burdens, it's not nearly enough. Even with the July 24th increase, workers will still make less than they did in 1956, after adjusting for inflation. Another reality check: An individual earning $7.25 an hour in a standard 2,000-hour work year would earn $14,500 per year, which is still slightly below the 2009 federal poverty level of $14,570 for a family of two.
