Start by making sure that an exposure never occurs. Talk to your union representative about the SEIU Safe Needle Campaign and take action to make sure your facility uses safe needle technology to keep you Safe!
Act at once! Clean the wound with soap and water or flush mucous membranes immediately. Notify your supervisor.

Enter the health care system as soon as possible. Get an assessment of the exposure, baseline testing, and recommended treatment. Although the effectiveness of anti-viral therapy is uncertain, to be effective, prophylaxis should be received within 1-2 hours of the exposure. Adhere to instructions for counseling, follow-up testing, and drug therapy.
