It used to be that if you worked hard to support yourself and your family, you could count on retiring with the peace of mind that you could pay your bills, get the health care you need, and avoid being a financial burden on your loved ones.
But today the ideas we had about life after retirement no longer hold true.
A majority of Americans now worry that they will have to delay retiring to afford increased living expenses and health care costs. Even worse, a growing number of workers say retirement might never be an option.
And things are looking worse for younger workers—less than 29 percent of workers under 34 receive any retirement benefit at all from their employers.
We need a new retirement system that matches the changing needs and work habits of the 21st century worker.
