Fighting for the middle class, and for our future

20110222me_SB5opposition_OH_27web.jpg
Firefighter Dan Rihm of the Springfield, Ohio area used a bullhorn to rally the thousands of activists protesting Ohio Senate Bill 5. The job killing, anti-worker bill, passed out of committee by a vote of 7 to 5 with Republican Jim Hughes voting NO and standing with working people in Ohio against this attack on our Middle Class. Now anti-worker Republican Senators are trying to suspend the rules in the Senate and push this bill through to a vote as early as Wednesday evening. Stay tuned for more of our continued photo coverage of Ohio and Wisconsin on our flickr page.

These Officers Stand for Security

20101203cyw_SecurityPortrait_LA_84sm.jpg

USWW Security Officers in California recently took part in a portrait series that showed them on the job, and captured the importance of their work. We were more than pleased with the results from professional photographers Colin Young-Wolff, and Norbert Von Der Groeben, and thank them for their work. Check out the set on our Flickr page.

Still Standing for Justice, 20 years later...

20100826sd_JPmorganJanitorProtest_43web.jpg

More than 48 hours into their hunger fast, janitors who were fired from JP Morgan Chase's prestigious 2000 Avenue of the Stars address marched into the intersection linking arms. Though weak from lack of food, their spirit was strengthened by the supporters chanting, dancing, and waving signs.

Calling on JP Morgan Chase to stop the layoffs at their buildings, 13 community activists and a clergy member sat down in the middle of the intersection until police arrested them for their act of civil disobedience.

Century City's business as usual came to a standstill yesterday afternoon as the janitors who lost their jobs cleaning JPMorgan Chase-owned Century Plaza towers were joined by 500 janitors, community activists, and union supporters at a march and protest in Los Angeles. Honoring 20 years of Justice for Janitors

In 1990, the janitors of Century City in Los Angeles faced media criticism and police brutality while on strike from April 3 until April 22. When they finally reached a contract agreement that guaranteed at least a 22% raise over the next three years, the victory was historic.

They won a union, and the landmark campaign proved to be a turning point for re-organizing the workers responsible for sweeping and cleaning up the sparkling high rises of Los Angeles, Denver, Miami, Houston, Boston, Minneapolis, Washington, DC, and Canada.

We honor the courageous efforts of those janitors, by celebrating the 20th anniversary of the campaign. Learn more about Justice for Janitors: seiu.me/j4j20
