SEIU’s Henry: SEIU members mourn the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, champion for women, working people

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a champion for women and all working people, including essential workers who so often have been ignored by the powerful.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Service Employees International Union International President Mary Kay Henry released the following statement honoring the life of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg:

“Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a champion for women and all working people, including essential workers who so often have been ignored by the powerful. She fought tenaciously to leave this world a better place, and we live in a more just and equal country because of it. Justice Ginsburg recognized before much of the country that civil rights are for everyone and as a union that is predominantly women, whose work has been undervalued, we are indebted to the vision and dedication that defined her life. Justice Ginsburg is an inspiration to me, as well as millions of SEIU members. Her death is an incredible loss for the entire country. Tonight we mourn her, and my condolences are with her family and friends.

“Justice Ginsburg’s dying wish was for the next president to appoint her successor. That wish must be honored. Anything less would be an affront to the Americans who expect to have a voice in their democracy, including the people who are already casting ballots. There can be no movement on a nominee to replace her enormous shoes before the next president is sworn in.”
