SEIU Sáenz: People with TPS deserve dignity and respect and should not be treated as disposable
WASHINGTON - Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Secretary-Treasurer Rocío Sáenz issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision that will allow the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti and Syria:
“No matter where you come from or the color of your skin, everyone deserves to feel safe and secure in our communities. The ruling by the Supreme Court that will allow the administration to terminate TPS and work authorization and potentially to force thousands of individuals and their families back to Haiti and Syria to their potential death is not only cruel but also reprehensible and immoral.
SEIU members see this case for what it truly is: another blatant attempt by this administration to overstep its authority and strip power from working people by sowing division among us. We recognize the tactic, and we refuse to remain silent.
People with TPS are our friends, extended family members, neighbors, and coworkers, including many leaders in our union who fight for better wages and working conditions for all workers. They deserve dignity and respect and should not be treated as disposable.
We urge the administration to immediately reverse course and restore TPS protections for those countries and others, and keep families together and safe. We also urge members of Congress to immediately support the “Renewing Immigration Provisions of the Immigration Act of 1929,” H.R. 4696 in the House, or S. 2468 in the Senate, that provides a path to permanent residence and citizenship to long-term residents. They deserve the opportunity to live their lives fully and contribute to our economy and the American Dream that we all share.”
