SEIU’s Verrett on Administration plan to cancel ACA healthcare for nearly 800,000 people

WASHINGTON, DC – Following reports that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services canceled 315,000 ACA policies covering nearly 800,000 people, citing unverified eligibility and suspected fraudulent enrollment, SEIU International President April Verrett released the following statement:

“Health care is a promise we make to one another: that when you're sick, when your child needs a doctor, when someone you love needs medicine or treatment, you should be able to get the care you need without risking everything you’ve worked for.

Of course, we should root out fraud. Of course we should protect the integrity of our healthcare system. But people should not lose their health coverage without adequate notice and a fair opportunity to establish their eligibility.

At a time when working families are already stretching every paycheck to cover housing, groceries, utilities and everything else, we should be making life more secure, not less. Instead, Medicaid changes are projected to leave millions more people uninsured, the enhanced ACA tax credits that helped millions afford coverage were allowed to expire, and now hundreds of thousands more are seeing their coverage canceled.

The result is less security for working people: fewer families with health coverage and higher costs for many of those who still have it. We should be moving in the other direction — making health care more affordable, coverage more dependable, and giving every family the peace of mind that getting sick won’t upend everything they’ve worked so hard to build.”
