SEIU PRESIDENT VERRETT: THIS WIN BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE — NO MORE POLITICS AS USUAL.

WASHINGTON, DC: Service Employees International Union President April Verrett released the following statement after Democrats captured majorities in both the U.S. House and Senate and pick up four new state trifectas:

"Taking back the House and flipping the Senate is a victory that belongs to the people: the parents choosing between rent and medicine, the workers whose paychecks can’t keep up, the immigrant families fighting to keep their loved ones safe, and everyone who refused to believe their neighbor was the enemy.

SEIU members put their hearts into this fight. We knocked doors, called our neighbors and organized around a simple belief: working people demand money, power and respect. Today, we celebrate with joy, with pride and with renewed confidence in what we can accomplish.

But the lesson we take from this victory matters as much as the victory itself. Working people voted for change they can feel in their lives. That hope cannot be answered with politics as usual—a system where billionaires and giant corporations call the shots while the people who keep this country running struggle to get by.

To the leaders we elected: We are proud of what we accomplished together. We lifted you up. Now it’s time for you to deliver for us. To lower costs, make care affordable, protect immigrant families and make it easier for every worker to join a union. SEIU members will bring our energy, our organizing power and our determination to these fights. And we will hold you accountable for delivering.
