It’s with great sadness that I share the sudden passing of John Reid — who spent years as Executive Vice President at 1199 SEIU after devoting his life to improving the lives of working families.

I loved John Reid. He was such a compassionate, tough and strong man. I could always count on an incredible bear hug and then to be drawn into a righteous fight for working people—University of Maryland Medical System recognition for hospital workers, Hopkins fight for $15, and every important Maryland electoral fight.

He was always willing to help the union work better, wanted leaders to get along, and do the right thing by every member.

He was gracious, always welcomed you into his home and was willing to share his wisdom.

He has decades of leadership on behalf of the fight for racial and economic justice. As an 1199 warrior who led us into many battles that made our union stronger, I can't imagine how devastated the 1199 SEIU family is at the tremendous loss.

We mourn his death and celebrate his life and contribution to our movement. Please share in the remembrance of his life, adding your reflections and stories on Facebook.
